Chow Dong Hoy: Portraits from the Frontier Documentary |

Chow Dong Hoy (1883-1973) was a Chinese immigrant to the Central Interior of British Columbia in the early 1900s. He worked as a photographer and general merchant in Barkerville and Quesnel. His work as a photographer and his legacy among the Chinese-Canadian, Euro-Canadian, and Aboriginal communities are explored in this video documentary which will have its broadcast premiere on Global Television on May 17, 2003. The documentary was produced by Lynn Booth (Make Believe Media; http://www.makebelievemedia.com), directed by Lynn Booth and Faith Moosang, and edited by Heather Frise. |

The preliminary programme for the May 2003 "Northern Coasts
and Islands" conference, co-hosted by Canadian Studies and
Scandinavian Studies at the University of Edinburgh, is now
available at http://www.cst.ed.ac.uk The conference
takes place on May 1 to 2, 2003. Presenters include John Lutz, University of Victoria, and Keith Carlson, University of Saskatchewan, both talking about British Columbia topics.

Call for Papers
International Canadian Studies Symposium
The current vibrancy of international scholarship in Canadian Studies is
due in large measure to the diligent academic tradition of inquiry and
research that examines Canada from a distance. Canadian Studies at the
University College of the Cariboo, Kamloops, British Columbia, is hosting
our inaugural international interdisciplinary conference entitled Across
Time and Space: Visions of Canada from Abroad, to be held September 12 -
14, 2003.
The conference committee welcomes proposals for presentations on varied
related topics including Canadian literature, politics, history, culture,
and First Peoples. Papers presented may be considered for a possible
conference proceedings publication. Please forward abstract submissions to

New Museum Act for BC introduced on Heritage Day |

The Honurable George Abbott, Minister of Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services, introduced the new Museum Act (Bill 2, 2003) for first reading on Heritage Day, February 17. The act establishes the Royal British Columbia Museum as a Crown corporation, and amalgamates the archives of the government, the heritage Helmcken House, and the Netherlands Carillon with the Museum. The text and progress of the bill, along with the verbatim Hansard debates, are available on the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia's Web site (http://www.legis.gov.bc.ca). |
South Pender Island developers and archaeological site |

According to a report in the Times-Colonist newspaper (February 13, 2003, p. B2), development for the South Pender Island Poets Cove development was halted over allegations by First Nations that the Bedwell Harbour archaeological site was destroyed. |
